Change Is Good! Simmons Café and Market Transforms Into Natural Foods Store
“When people walk through our front door, we want to relieve their stress,” says Jennifer Grantham, owner of the rejuvenated Simmons Café and Market.
This community market had been for sale for five years when Grantham, with two young children and a newly minted MBA in sustainability, decided to buy it. She and her team have transformed the old-style market into an expansive natural foods store, with handmade gift items (think holidays!), and a welcoming Internet café, with an inviting couch and wing chair, a shelf of newspapers, a kiddie corner and free cups of fruity water. Local paintings and photos hang on the pine-paneled walls.
All-natural in-house roasted meats contribute to more than a dozen deli sandwiches. Handmade soups and take-home dinners are available, plus house-made cookies (the coconut crunch with chocolate chips rocks!).
Weekly “community events” this winter will include a natural beauty workshop, a mushroom demonstration, a book group, a fermentation workshop and much, much more. “We’re always changing it up,” Grantham emphasizes.
